Re: Appraise skill changes
I would believe in many cases that people do not get RP out of using their appraise skill to talk to NPCs, because there is no other way to interact with them .. but it happens.Septire wrote:I don't agree with the notion that RP has been destroyed with this change
It did always bring a laugh out of me when my characters wife would look to sneak away from husband to go trade with a Gnoll, well in the knowledge of how much they disgust him. She always made up excuses for why she had to leave, she always gave reasons why he either couldn't either follow her or go under the waterfall. Upon questioning she would make up little white lies whilst displaying her tell that she's lying .. my character being clueless to them.
It probably doesn't happen much, the RP can probably be replaced by something else, but the RP has happened.

Well, I've been complainin IG for a while now about the massive number of crappy and overpriced shops all over the server, surface and UD, I stopped doing this because I learned that when I run a shop of my own filled with actually useful stuff people can afford, I get rich quick
Moral of the story, don't run a crappy shop

Re: Appraise skill changes
The shops are another platform for RP. If you run a shop in order to get rich faster mechanically by "breaking the market" with your genius business plan, sure you might get rich, but that's not RP that's a legal exploit more than anything. If you sell things you did not craft, order from another crafter, found in loot and consulted with friends about it's usefulness and value, or otherwise used the shop as a platform for RP you're wasting our shops. Buying stuff from NPCs and reselling it (even if it pays off for the costumer as well, eventually) is not RP, it's a means to get rich and the only thing you're doing is simply prioritizing apprise in your build so you can get easier money and not through IC interaction with the world so much.

My genius business plan
Low level, we sold glass, 3 players helped keep it stocked
Mid level, we sold spell components, and cut gems 2 player made glass, 1 made spell components, and 1 cut gems
Epics we sell essences and spell components and gonne slugs with orders for cut gems
probably not going to be able to sell gems as much with this update, but profits are still solid

Re: Appraise skill changes
At the height of my drow's merchant career I ran seven shops in the Underdark. I do not mean to brag or sound expertly but I do feel having been in control of so many shops I have a bit of experience and understanding with the market as it was. In the end my pc became a multi millionaire and it wasn't until the last few weeks of my drow pc's career that I actually stocked essences regularily. Passive income isn't the problem. I have no issues whatsoever with buying from and NPC and placing said items in a player run shop. It was the lack of regulation pertaining to issues such as Macros or buying from one NPC and selling to another which was the issue. These two examples are not in the spirit of the game and could have easily been handled by warning and then banning offenders.
I worked hard for my millions and take offense to those who just assume all merchants take advantage of the system. I spent countless hours walking around encumbered to stock my shops and took being a merchant quite seriously and thought I was doing a service to the community by trying to keep prices, for the most part, cheaper than anyone else in the underdark. I tried to offer a range of goods for all levels of pc's and types of pc's. It is this effort, which most others who don't play merchants on the server wont' understand, which I feel to be the reason why so many others feel a bit aggrieved at the change. Somehow it has been entangled in the change to appraise.
As for those complaining about getting rich through a capitalist market system. Why do you care so much? I never hunted and levelled basically by being in game running my shops and rping. Running around mindlessly through the same dungeons over and over and over and over is tedious and boring. Don't slam others play styles just because you don't have as much coin as they might. Perhaps being a merchant is just as much fun as hunting for some.

Re: Appraise skill changes
I know that this is the needed stress testing and i'm trying not to be negative. But I just don't see people actually posting hard numbers in these threads. Of where they went, for how long, what they got in profit etc. So the Devs have some actual numbers to work with. So folks who do the end-game dungeons like me mind posting what you get with what dungeons, your character's search/Appraise skill and your cost of doing the dungeon?

That's a good idea! I will start taking note and posting in the appropriate thread as I adventure from low-level to high-level.Ramza wrote:I know that this is the needed stress testing and I'm trying not to be negative. You can't read, can you? I won't elaborate. I will encourage you to read, instead.DreamOfCream wrote:Iria, i think you may be taking things out of proportions here. I understand this may negatively effect your characters or RP, for which I'm sorry. But I can assure you, life will go on. From the few days I've played post-update, people seem generally happy with the changes.
Times like these it's important to remember you're playing a 12 year old game and you certainly have gotten your money's worth
As for proportion? I think I lined it up nicely. And I totally called it. I have found several new shops. 1 had useful items. The rest were what I can only assume to be the trash from dungeons that the owners didn't have a use for themselves. I saw another one that I THINK once held useful items, but sold out faster than they could craft.

I'm glad that, in typical Arelith forum fashion, we've devolved to passive aggressiveness and smiley faces.

Re: Appraise skill changes
Always priceless.
Though, really.
Iria, dear - take a chill pill. You've been ranting about this change for the last seven pages and you haven't even given the update a chance. We all have had some change screw over an aspect of our characters in our time of Arelith. Fighters were super nerfed, animal companions were grounded into uselessness, I personally had a totem ranger that could polymorph at full level for months and when they changed that all my RP went down the drain.
At length, everything was for the best.

Dear? Let me tell you something, kiddo. Assuming genders doesn't go well. If you know my gender, then you must be coming on to me. I do not appreciate sexual harassment. No means no, bro.
But seriously, not all is for the best, or there wouldn't be roll backs. And roll backs come when the consequences of a slip up become apparent. Some days, some months later. I pointed out cons. Some didn't receive them well, and the sarcasm begins.
MOST of the update is pretty bitchin'

Eh, I call everybody dear and darling, specially when I want to sound exceedingly condescending.
In any case, I think this thread is /thread'ed.
