The Boat Situation
More information - viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11349
Pretty much let's talk about boats again, a lot more shops got added in game. I would like to perhaps see the selection of boats expanded past eight. This is a nice place to talk about boats and the dreams you have about one day owning a boat or perhaps if we add boats how big should the boats be, what capabilities should they have and who should own them? I don't know why it was decided that only a few should exist, but maybe it is time we add more for the sake of all the people RPing pirates with no way to join a pirate crew.

Re: The Boat Situation
If more boats get added, my ideal mental idea of them is "Take the Weary Troubadour and the Sea Leopard from Myon and Brog (respectively), and give them each their own ships". The Troubadour's been owned by Myon (On the same character) for something like two or three years at this point.

Re: The Boat Situation
At this point I myself would settle for more rentable boats at the least. While we're at it, better dungeons for the surface but that's another story...
But yes. I know of some, (myself included) that would love the opportunity to sail the seas under a pirate flag pillaging the towns-people. AARRRR

Of course we'll set aside funds for the expansion and renovation of Arelith's naval capacity.
That sounds like a wonderful idea!

If the surface were to get new or revamped dungeons. Some NPC villages or farmsteads the UD could actually raid would be amazing. The Melancholy Harmony wrote:At this point I myself would settle for more rentable boats at the least. Re: The Boat Situation
As much as I want more boats and the likes I do remember hearing mention the last time this topic came up that they are a pain to implement, compared to other things.
Re: The Boat Situation
I can certainly see this thread becoming toxic later on. I will just say that from my experience, when I owned a boat for several RL months, it's very hard to recruit and the amount of people who show interest is surprisingly low.

Re: The Boat Situation
It's the Marble Boat, a pavilion in Beijing's Summer Palace. It was built originally by an early Qing emperor, and then destroyed by Westerners during the Second Opium War. Fast forward to the 1890's: the Dowager-Empress Cixi was coming under increasing pressure to modernize the Chinese navy. Her response was to have funds that were earmarked for the navy diverted to repair this.
But that's enough of educational spam.

Re: The Boat Situation
Adding more boats is not the answer. We have tried that. They usually get occupied by a group of people who rarely use it and just let it hang by the dock. Pretty much destroying the whole purpose of us adding more boats as they are not even used and given a month or two we are back here again with similar topics.
More rentable boats could be an idea though. But I would like to discuss with Irongron exactly how we can change the boat system to be more of use other than going to secret dungeons or whatever.

Re: The Boat Situation
I do think adding one or two more boats might be a good thing since the playerlist seems to have increased quite a bit just from what I remember half a year ago

Re: The Boat Situation
Can't we 'make' our own boats, connected to our characters/factions with a large rent upkeep? That way we can choose what style of boat we like, what name it has and its capabilities.
Re: The Boat Situation
I remember it being said that adding additional boats is tough, and requires a lot of new script work and editing of current scripts. Just something to keep in mind.

Re: The Boat Situation
I argue that piracy's main goal is to encounter other ships, so when less boats are on the water people are less likely to want to wait around on a boat for a chance encounter someone decides to visit Blackfin Rock. I do realize it is a pain to code however.
Re: The Boat Situation
I'm so confused as a new player. What's a boat on this server aside from the NPC-driven ones e.g. Barftown => Brog and why are they important?

Re: The Boat Situation
There are locations that are only accessible by boat.
Not NPC boats like the one you mentioned. Player-owned boats. They work like quarters, kinda.

Re: The Boat Situation
I'd love to see access to the Weary Troubadour and Sea Leopard changed.
For the Sea Leopard have it so that access is tied to a "pirate" background that could be attained in game. Evil requirement, character cannot join settlements (unless piracy is renounced?), and some shops are not willing to do business with you. Like the Harper system, have it so that the pirate brethren can identify eachother.
For the Weary Troubadour, again tie it to "Sailor" background attainable in game or at selection. Good only requirement? While a crew member character cannot join settlement. Would love some other limitation.
Both scenarios foster a much more inclusive environment. You want to be a pirate? Sure, join the Arelith brethren! You want to be an explorer, sailor etc? Join the Troubadour. I doubt things will get out of hand, but some limitations and sacrifices need to be made so that these paths are something only players dedicated to sailing rp would choose.

Re: The Boat Situation
I did experiment with a module concept where everyone had their own boat and the module consisted of exploring the seas, finding islands with randomised resources and spawns, and claiming them to build a merchant empire.
I also experimented with a caste concept, where different castes had different strengths and weaknesses (nobles got fewer craft points but were the only ones able to lead settlements, for example, while slaves couldn't hold bank accounts but had significant crafting bonuses). This tied into the background system, where your background determined your caste.
A combination of the two might be interesting, where sailors have access to naval resources but need merchant characters to actually sell what they create. But I always shied away from introducing the caste system, as while I love the idea of different characters having access to different features to give more hooks for RP, I never wanted to face the backlash of taking away chunks of module content from different people

Re: The Boat Situation
No, it kinda doesn't. Just please stop. Do all that experimental stuff on FL plz.
This might SEEM like a good idea, but it really would impede your character's progression in a variety of ways that inhibit the natural development that occurs whilst rping with people and interacting.
Locking yourself into a caste would be a poor idea.

Re: The Boat Situation
I actually really like that sort of thing.
Just to say that some people enjoy different things, and we're all not nessicarily going to agree, but that certainly doesn't mean Mith should stop coding kthx.

Re: The Boat Situation
To an extent, we already have that in the shape of Outcasts, which is something I'd like to see expanded.
