Monk Path Suggestion: Path of the Sensei

We will file suggestions here that did not make the cut. Don't expect detailed responses, but the most common reasons are:

  • implementing the suggestion is impractical, or too much work for the gain
  • the suggestion is thematically against our design philosophy
  • the suggestion is too detailed/low-level
Keep your suggestions broad and focused on RP benefits, please, not detailed suggestions of how to fix everything.

Monk Path Suggestion: Path of the Sensei

Post by RedGiant »

There are still a few classes out there who lack a bit of love in the path department. Arguably monk can take Kensal, but here is a more tailored suggestion. I'm not even sure its technically possible, but then again, wizards work here...so here we go.

Many have lamented the lack of combat ability, yet loved the idea, of a wisdom-based monk. Martial Arts stories are filled with examples of the feeble, old master who deftly defeats or frustrates the physically superior young learner.

Enter the Path of the Sensei.

Lvl 1: Replace Evasion with Slippery Mind feat.
The Sensei is mentally agile over physically agile. Some will balk that monks eventually become immune to mind effect...yeah...at lvl 20. This is the same principle as the snake totem being immune to poison. The Sensei is gifted early with uncanny mental ability.

Lvl 9: Replace Improved Evasion with Improved Zen Archery.
What is Improved Zen Archery you ask? Well, here is the part where I'm not sure its technically possible, but I'm sure a Dev could tell us. What I suggest is the impartation of the Zen Archery feat that also now adds the wisdom modifier to base attack bonus across the board. The Sensei is gifted with an uncanny ability to anticipate his opponent and can accurately place fists or fires where his opponent will be.

My suggestion is rather simple, on par with the small changes of the ranger paths. I think this is a balanced approach, which sacrifices some of the "immune to everything" feel of the dex monk for a heightened effectiveness in key abilities that a wisdom-based monk will inevitably produce. In other words, the Sensei would usually have more effective stunning fists and quivering palms at the expense of a newly introduced vulnerability to explosions and various magical effects.
