Castle Gloom
Does it really make sense for a settlement to own it? It doesn't seem like it.

If this is true, I would think not. Shouldn't it be available for a seedy shadow mage, or related organization to hold? Is it a purchasable guild hall?

Technically the castles are owned by the Mayfield's Land Brokerage, and I suppose the Brokerage can do with them whatever it wants to, like allowing settlements to bid for the castles on auctions in order to acquire them temporarily for the period of five in-game years, as the system currently works.

Why limit it to settlements though? I never understood that part.
The only concern I see is that it may end up being purchased by a single PC, that stops playing after a while, leaving a castle unused for a couple of months. Which is difficult to happen to a settlement as owner.

I think you do understand, because that is exactly the right answer. They're meant to be used, not locked down. Glooms setup is pretty annoying and not very helpful either. The portal out can only be reached by going through a privately owned quarter. It's not near anything of value, the shadow door is kind of cool but utlimately only prooves to be a greater liablitity.
I put in a suggestion that there ought to be a way to let none citizens beable to use the castle. Like you can appoint nobles in the castle, but unless that noble is also a citizen, it cannot be used. I think that suggestion was approved but there's no timeline on it being implemented.
Ultimately though the castle can fall into dis-use just as much I think as it might from a regular single player owning it. If the settlement leader that owns the castle isn't interested in giving the space out to another group, or doesn't have their own plans for it.

What is the timer on these castles being reset? Have the same cities been repeatedly buying them?

I think it's 4 years of ownership, the 5 year is split in half, half the year is for bidding, the other half you have to move out if you lost the bid.
To the castles Credit, if you actually want it, it can create a lot of RP. Clea went to some considerable lengths to secure Gloom a second time, and had gotten a pretty good amount of gold contributed to it not out of her own pockets but by pulling political strings or negotiating. It was pretty fun.
I think Gloom/Darrow deep have always belonged to Myon/Brog?
I'm thinking how the castles might fall out of the loop of commonly good aligned settlements. I think Andunor can bid? If you want IC info I'd go talk to the registrar dude at mayfields the NPC has dialog explaining all of it.

Gloom i think at one point was Cordors.
If I remember right, Andunor while they /can/ bid, their not actually allowed to own any of the two surface castles, because of the monsters rules... I think, you'd need to double check that, as I recall Andunor almost got Darrow deep once, and we were assured that wouldn't be allowed, that may of changed though since this was a few years ago when Darrow deep was added.

The monster rule is a good point, I was thinking more of the sharps because it could be humans persay? They should remove those options from the registrar then. I hadn't really followed the castle mechanics very closely when they were first released, so I think you're right.

A sort of quick FAQ rundown for the Castles.
1. Bidding time frames are found in a side room at the Mayfield Inn.
2. Certain individuals can bid for the castle, however it also must be associated with a settlement.
3. Once leased by a settlement all citizens of that settlement can access it, at least the basic entrances.
The Monster/Outcast policy is still in effect for the Castles, they are not permitted.
