Templates. How do we communicate this mechanic to new players?
Hey! It's Scraps.
So Templates. They're good. -Well, at least I like them.
However. Information on Templates and how to use them, or even that you can or should use them with your ranged weapons at all is practically non existent.
Consider a new player. Fresh to game. "Hey, I'ld love to use a bow! That's a cool fantasy trope!"
How does this person find out what templates are? How to get one for themselves? And even then, how they then figure out how to fill one out properly. That spells can go in it? Which spells can go in it? Essences?
Sorry look, what I'm saying is I don't believe there are enough sources of knowledge out there for what I consider to be a very important tool for characters that use ammunition.
And I guess this is kind of an open letter into possible ways to communicate to new players (Or just players new to templates) who use a Bow, or Crossbow, or Throwing Axe or... Whatever. That Templates exist, and they're an important tool in increase your damage with your ranged weapon.

I think the simplest and laziest solution would be have characters produce an "extra basic" template if they have no other templates in their inventory that has only 1 unstable slot and degrades with uses.

Honestly I have no idea how they work and I’m not exactly new. I just figured when I get around to making an archer character I would be on discord asking around. But more information would be nice in the case of new players that haven’t found their way to discord or are smart enough to stay away, as the op pointed out

yeah as a returning player i had no idea that templates didn't produce ammo of its own and had to be paired with bundles, it was seriously confusing as all heck

Go ahead and put that book on the wiki. This kind of mechanical information is imperative for people to know when considering a ranged PC, given how painful ranged PCs are to play without reliable good ammunition in the first place.
Plays: Durvayas(deleted), Marco(deleted), Hounynrae(NPC), Sinithra Auvry'ndal(rolled), Rauvlin Barrith(Active), Madeline Clavelle(Shelved)

how they work is broadly on the wiki, just poorly explained. as for what spells do what this seems to be intentionally left out, but can still be communicated/published IG.Durvayas wrote: Sun Sep 01, 2019 1:43 pm Go ahead and put that book on the wiki. Who is the audience for this post?

Yeah, Kenji's guide is amazing! I'd just like it or something like it made easily available for new players looking for the information.
Perhaps links on the wiki for ranged classes to a page on Templates? Or even the guide itself?
