Named Spells

Post by Kuma »

Spells like Mordenkainen's x, Tenser's x, Melf's x, Isaac's x, Shelgarn's x etc etc etc.

Should we remove the "names" and leave them as, say, "Disjunction"?
Should we keep the names? Should we make them Arelith or FR specific?

I'm curious. These names travelled across the planes, canonically, as the names for various spells through the Realms despite many of these mages not actually existing in the Realms.

Meanwhile, Nybor invented Wrathful Castigation, but she isn't referenced.

I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on the matter, now that we have haks and can easily do this.

I believe names should be kept, and actually, more of them should be tacked on, like with Nybor's Wrathful Castigation mentioned by the OP. It adds flavor to the wizardry and spellcasting and also lets people innovate upon them.

But for the spells mentioned, Mordenkainen has been to FR, and worked with Elminster, so it wouldn't be too weird if he also brought in the spells of his colleagues - Tenser and Melfs'. As for Isaac and Shelgarn - they are already FR-based, as their spells are unique to both NWN games and not been anywhere outside in that naming.

Currently playing: Vinur Reiziger (sorta shelved, sorta not), Samwell Twolife

One of my pet peeves with Pathfinder is that they have all these spells but stripped them of the cool origin names without putting new ones, and I've always been secretly sad that newer versions of D&D removed the name from Horrid Wilting.

So yeah, I'm very much for keeping the names, and to try to include them in new additions.

Absolutely keep the names and add more.

Bring back Abu-Dhalzim's Horrid Wilting!

Leave them. Canonically they exist and it makes no sense for them to suddenly be "forgotten."

my pet peeve is really just the ones that are "well they're canon! they were brought by elminster, who met mordenkainen! in LITERALLY ED GREENWOOD'S GOD DAMN HOUSE BECAUSE HE'S A HORRIFYINGLY BAD WRITER"

i feel this is a valid opinion to have

in this case then i'd push for adding MORE names to spells. nybor's wrathful castigation, etc etc.

Actually agreed, I'll update WC and Horrid Wilting. Any other names?

Also would be cool to see Arelith specific character in names for a new unique spell.

Maybe a cool DM/dev event with the server's mages experimenting new spell stuff could be cool in adding some new named spells in down the line. Making and researching new spells is some cool Wizard RP even though we can't really actually do it in game based on game limitations

Scorching Ray is a good candidate for Aganazzar's Scorcher, but that involves renaming all that stuff.

You could consider adding the other Nybor's spells as well if you wanted to add more to Enchantment.

Zajimarn's Field of Icy Razors could be Glacial Wrath.

Otto's Irresistible Dance.

https://dndtools.net/spells/magic-of-fa ... res--1691/ - could be an improved Chromatic Sphere.

Abi-Dalzim’s Horrid Wilting is the correct spelling per the WotC website, I spelled ti wrong.

Thanks for this. I'll have a look at it and add it in. Field of Icy Razors is a different spell from Glacial Wrath and we already have code for this one for Wild Mages its just not in yet as an official spell but may be down the line.

And if you're ever in the avenue of considering new epic spells, there's always Tolodine's Killing Wind that a certain epic boss already uses! :D
