Vendrgaunt Colosseum Line of Sight Problem

Post by Aradin »

I recently had the pleasure of inaugurating the Vendrgaunt Colosseum in Dis with a big combat tournament. There was lots that was great about the setting, but there were a few problems with line of sight that came up I'd like to discuss here in the hopes that the colosseum can be improved for future events. Putting this in Feedback instead of Suggestions because other people may have great ideas I haven't considered.

All arenas suffer from a little bit of LOS challenge, but the colosseum has:
1) The largest size of any arena (I think).
2) A big height difference between where the audience is and the where the combatants are
3) Two large pillars in the middle of the arena

All of these things contribute to the action being difficult to see. When you're standing at the railing, you have a remarkably narrow field of vision looking down into the arena. And if the action is on the opposite side of those two pillars, you can't see it at all.
The arena layout is terrific from a contestant's perspective, offering a large size and meaningful obstacles - but not from an audience member's perspective. My referee had to be down in the arena itself just to see what was going on and make proper calls.

A few ideas on fixing it:
1) Remove the braziers from the central pillars and allow audience members to spectate from them. This would let people see just about everything and let them be inside the arena, wreathed in the action (very fitting for the Hells, no?).
2) Reduce the height difference between the arena floor and the audience. Height-wise it's like looking off a cliff, so unless you're right at the edge you can barely see anything down there.
3) Add another area on the opposite side of the arena, allowing audience members to see what's happening on both sides of the pillars.
4) There are Dissian observer nodes all around the city for security purposes. What if the colosseum had a few for spectator purposes? Acting like scrying but offering a bird's eye view of the arena so you can see absolutely everything.

Looking forward to hearing others' thoughts on this. And thanks to all who attended/participated in the Contest of Might & Magic! It was a lot of fun.

Having watched (admittedly smaller) fights in it after it went live, everything you posted there has definitely been on my radar. But I'm really not going to have the time to totally remake the place in any near future.

As a direct result of some of the screenshots I saw and feedback like this, I did make a few simple adjustments to the area that ought to improve most everything you described. Those changes should be live soon.

Done.
