There is something off about the listen/spot ratios of many monsters in the UD, specially when one takes into account the areas they are in, the intended level, and just the thematic of the spawns themselves.
This is not new, and for a long time I just figured this was a way to represent how most creatures in the Underdark have, indeed, adapted to a world without light and where their other senses are heightened to the extreme, in order to cope with many predatorial creatures.
However, a few recent experiences made me think that some of these might need to be tweaked or at least looked at. Here's one that just happened:
Beholders were not detecting my character, while quite regularly, far easier mobs, from some in the darkfalls to others in the coastal path, do.
Even slimes in the Rothe caverns will regularly spot her.
With her current score, both skills in the 50s, I would expect it to, logically, be the other way around.
I know there were some scripts added a while ago, where certain singular creatures could roll high for their spot/listen checks, but still.
It shouldn't be easier to stealth past beholders than it is to stealth past far more mundane things,

Re: Monster spot/listen in the UD
Slimes have that thing which I forgot the name but it's like Tremor sense 30ft radius something and it's basically True sight in a 30ft radius so that might explain it

Stingers too, there is no hiding from them.

Good to know!
Again, in many ways it makes sense for many of these creatures.
It just strikes me sometimes as an extra layer of difficulty that fluctuates weirdly when playing a stealther.
Perhaps it is by design and the best thing to do is learn how to navigate around such things.

Pretty much. In the UD you learn to build around dealing with these things as commonplace. Just remember stuff like slimes have low hp and any blunt weapon will get rid of them fast.Borin Drakkmurl wrote: Sun Mar 07, 2021 12:18 am Good to know!
