Spellsword Multiclass

Post by Apothys »

Hi,

just a bit of feedback on multiclassing with a spellsword. Now i could be missing some great combo here.

I've tried it with Cavalier and its nice to have a horse on demand but it doesn't really work, you lose too much from being a full 30 Spellsword to say 26/4. Plus the Charge attack seems to clash with the Elemental Strike.

Invisible Blade works if you don't path, this one definitely had potential but combined with a path... again you seem to lose too much. For this id say a 27/3 is a good combination with no path or even the Bladesinger Path.

All other classes just don't seem to work multiclassing and I've tried to find a good combination with the paths I really have. There just doesn't seem to be any viable options that make not being a full 30 Spellsword worth it.

Anyway I'm loving my spellsword regardless but options would be nice. Maybe some synergies?

Swashbuckler has a minimal synergy. It was my understanding that the ability to mix spellsword with other classes was kept intentionally limited, especially for pathed spellswords.

I would not mind, however, if it was made slightly less painful to dip. Right now the dip is mostly for non-pathed to trade breach resistance and 1 ab (effectively, you lose 2, but you can still use gmw) for additional skills and 1 ac (in the case of a tumble dip, otherwise you lose 2 ac).

I really would like to see more multiclassing potential here. Spellswords are a really cool (albeit overpowered) class and I think we should see them made a bit more forgiving of multiclassing just for the sake of build creativity.

Also, while you seem to be focused on primary spellswords I actually think it would be a lot of fun to see more frontloaded goodies, something to give 6 fighter/5ranger/5divine a run for their money regarding Discipline/BaB dip classes.

I did consider Swashbucklar, however other than for rp purposes it doesn't seem trade off well. :( I did contemplate 4 levels of a full BAB class like Cavalier which gains you an attack. but then you lose the additional attack given at 27th level. Though if im honest i dont understand how that additional attack works, is it at full BAB? Is the trade off worth it?

Even going into like Bard or Rogue from tumble only seems to net you about 1 AC and doesn't seem worth it for what you lose. Even Monk doesnt stack.

Divine classes are a no go for obvious reasons.

Monk seems not compatible on the whole, since it disables the bonus attack.

Bard and rogue IMHO make mostly sense if you want some of their skills, like stealth or bluff, or umd, but not for the benefits in themselves. Rogue also has evasion. Warlock does not seem bad either since it grants the basic pact bonuses and is another tumble dip, oh and has toggleable eyes. :P

Loremaster can be interesting if you want some of its goodies.

Swashbuckler has insightful strike which is rather nice for a dual wielding spellsword, tumble, 1 bonus reflex save and bluff/perform.

The main issue, in my opinion, is that non-tumble dips are a bit too prohibitive at this time.

I've been tinkering with spellsword lately and it's a really tough choice no matter what you do.

I think a rogue 3 dip could be quite nice for some variants, but there is a price and it is felt.

So we're very much on track.

Due to the cut-off points for a lot of things being at awkward, non-synergistic levels, multiclassing is difficult.

You could go the Bladesinger path then do 26 spellsword/4 swashbuckler. The issue is you either miss out on 1 APR or 2 tumble AC.
However, the real numbers are this if you take the 4 levels pre-epic:
- 1 AB (missing from Weave Affinity)
- 1 AC (missing from Weave Affinity)
+ 4 damage from Insight Strike
- Ki Critical lost

Personally, it's an entire downgrade because you lose Ki Critical. However, it's still viable.

You're also losing the +5 enchancement bonus to imbue weapon, to +4 as it's every 6 levels!

It is +5 attack bonus, not enhancement bonus. And you still got Greater Magic Weapon that can get to +5 actual enhancement bonus.

You do lose the armor bonus from armor imbue though.

Whoops, depends on the path as marauder gets enhancement and the other two paths only get the base attack bonus.

Still a loss of -1 ab regardless that was not accounted for in the example above!
