Fishing Drops

Post by The_Icelord »

This probably would be better as a suggestion I suppose, but I've noticed that a lot of the fishing drops have only very specific uses, and even then, drops seem to be oddly randomized.

For instance, Eels, which produce ' gutted eel' can only be used in one recipe, which also requires 6 Jelly, which in turn each need 5 Kelp to make, and kelp seems to be something you don't catch very often.

I've also noticed that the amount of fish guts produced by various fish you catch only barely breaks even with the amount you need to make the bait to catch said fish, having this increased would help with making it easier to stock up on bait.

Jelly can also be obtained directly from a few other fish, which can be easily caught w/small bait or insects.

I do agree that fish guts are the real stopgap in making bait, not animal blood.
what would fred rogers do?

I've not fully analyzed the drop rates yet with recent addition of Crates and such.... but in the past Once you hit 'huge bait fishing' repeatedly, the Bait would always give you enough fish guts to replace the bait. In fact, there was a 37% average surplus in guts vs. what was needed to replace the bait used, even after the the bait recipe change, and that's before you take into account Lucky catches.

With the addition of crates to thin the guts received on average... it will be less then this, but the limiting resource on Bait will always be either Blood, or Crafting Points.

I for one think guts should be reduced, and not allow exclusive huge bait fishing. I think its good to need to utilize lower tier fishing to build up stocks towards the Huge bait.

I haven't gotten into huge bait fishing yet, but large, medium and small all have very narrow margins on guts used vs guts gained, and I've had times where I came up short after a particularly unlucky run.

Getting animal blood is straightforward, just hunt big game like bears and you'll have a good amount in a relatively short time.

As for the 'use small bait to stock up to get big bait' idea, I'd like to disagree on that, while I haven't seen what huge bait catches are like, small, medium and large are all rather underwhelming ( My sample size is about 200-300 of each ), and having to spend time fishing these when you could be fishing for bigger stuff seems rather counter productive.

Disclaimer: Suppose it will also depend what Hook you are utilizing. I've done all my data collection with Lucky Hooks. I've not done calculations on specific biome testing yet, which also could affect the yields.

Be for example, im my data collection large bait still has a healthy yield, even after the recipe update.
Large Bait
50 bait = 90 Guts, 90 blood

Average catch ratio
-------------------
3 "bad catches/Missing Bait"
28 Medium fish average of 2 guts per
19 Large Fish average of 3.5 guts per

So 122.5 Guts, which is 36% over yield without the inclusion of Lucky Catches. I average 7 lucky catches per 50 bait, which wouldd provide another average 17 Guts to the yield.
Even in small bait and medium baits, I find I've a saturation of guts and can utilize a percentage of yield fo Guts--> Blood recipe unless I'm trying to build up my bait supply. Though small bait is much more varied and sometimes doesn't yield well since there are several fish types that don't offer guts.

If your running out of guts though, easy enough to just utilize bugs for "free guts", as its bait that you don't spend anything on, and get full yield close to that of small bait.
