Recycling Traps is Great! Is the formula bugged?

Post by Tikin »

The recycling of traps is a real nice boon for the trappers with skill mastery, very enjoyable, thanks !

I’ve seen the suggestion about dismantling traps, I’ve been thinking about such a feature since I started to use traps and am a fan of the idea (and Yes, I also love the idea that rolling a 1 could mean trouble XD). Bonus idea: what if it were done thanks to a special feature on the “Dismantling Dagger”? :D

About the recycling, I have felt like it occurred less than what the formula led me to think it would, so I took the time to make a thorough count over a long session thanks to log archives.
Formula as it was posted in the updates:
(Trap Setter's Set Trap skill ranks divided by 2
plus
Trap Setter's Disarm Trap skill ranks divided by 2
plus
d20)
versus
10 + Trap setting DC dependent on severity:
Minor 5 / Average 10 / Strong 15 / Deadly 20 / Epic 25

I assumed it was only strict Hard Skill Ranks (not taking synergy or bonus from skill mastery or any gear in account).
My hard disable trap: 23. So half would be 11 rounded down.
My hard set trap: 33. So half would be 16 rounded down.

I used only Deadly traps (Fire, Tangle, Sonic, Electric, Spike).
So I assumed a roll of 27+d20 against a DC of 30, which would give 90% chances to recycle traps.
Results of my counts were: over 56 traps set by my toon and triggered by the enemies, 11 were recycled. While not a sufficient number to make an accurate statistic, it gives a tendency, of roughly 20% recycled traps. I have not felt any particular difference depending on the nature of the traps.

I’ve been thinking about what could explain this discrepancy between my theoretical calculations and actual in game recycling, if it helps pointing toward things to investigate:
1/ if my understanding of the formula was correct? … It looks like it is, but thought worth asking
2/ If “the DC of a set trap is modified by +1 for each 5 Rogue/Assassin/Zhent Operative/Harper Scout levels of the trapper.” Set trap rule from the wiki would be taken in the calculations … That would have bumped the DC by 6, which should result in 60% recycled traps …
3/ If “Epic traps also takes a coin toss to see if it is successfully recycled on top of the above formula” were applied to Deadly traps too, alone it would make 45% recycled traps, but on top of number 2/ then we would be at a 30% recycled traps. Then we get closer to the tendency of my count.

Thanks for your time and all the efforts to make the Rogue Experience better!

There's a recent bug fix on trap recycling. The d20 was on the side of the check rather than on the player side, so the chances your character was up against were higher than intended.

Let me know if the chances are still lower than your expected value of 90%+ return in a few resets.

For you, the day Kenji overhauled your class was the most important day of your life.
But for me, it was Tuesday. :face_with_monocle: To-do list

Checked only 1 type for a short run, but it seems to work wonders now!

Recycling works, but I think the update may have removed damage from gas traps!
