I think a neat twist to the current aura mechanics would be more interactions with other spell foci. For example, maybe being able to use ESF Abjuration to block viewing your aura entirely (including your sign if you have one) and ESF illusion to present an aura different from your actual base aura. There could even be layers to it. Like maybe if you had ESF Divination and cast True Seeing you could bypass aura blocking and spoofing. I think it would make things a little more interesting than the current state where if you have an Eye Of Savras you're basically on par with someone who has full spell foci (outside maybe deck of stars use which is fairly niche).
