Elemental Annihilation dmg scaling

Post by Cagus »

Spell description: Elementalist's chosen element; damage starts at d6+1 per caster level (max 30d6+30) and grows with Focus. Damage increases based on Focus: 25-40: d8; 40-75: d8 + CL; 75..90: d10 +CL; 90+: d12 +CL. Daze will apply when Focus > 50.

Which basically means max focus dmg for CL 27 Elementalist should be 27d12+27

Casted 20x times on air elementalist 27 CL, max focus (100)
Average DMG is way to low so it definitely does not follow dmg formula as it should.

Below is average calculation of EA's casted with dmg of each cast.
1 176
2 175
3 182
4 183
5 167
6 162
7 189
8 163
9 164
10 181
11 162
12 169
13 187
14 172
15 169
16 163
17 163
18 172
19 178
20 166

average: 172.15
which could be
average for 27d12 is 175.5
instead of what should be
average for 27d12+27 is 202.5

This seems a bit off.
Can you check on the calculation, this seems incorrect.

The maximum damage die for this spell appear to be d10.
Starts at d6, upgrades to d8 at 41 power, upgrades to d10 at 76 power.
This is in line with the numbers you are seeing.

Where did you see that it reads d12?

d12 isnt listed anywhere, wiki is incorrect though and doesnt match spell desc in game.

that said damage is wonky as hell, above 75% and I see as low as 154 and high as 225. Technically possible give how big a range d10 has but its weirdly inconsistent.

I do know the damage is the same for all targets, so if its 225 it hits them all for 225 and does 112on failed save. Maybe that affects the swingyness of it?

Edit:Further update 154 is really low actually and I noticed damage seems lower if your focus is lower than 75% after you cast, damage is delayed so maybe it calculates the dice at time of damage based on focus at that point, rather than focus at cast.

Edit2: after playing with a online dice roll on d20 3.5 maybe it is just the d10 being swingy. Didnt get a chance more if dipping below 75% as you cast annihilation lowers the dice though.

Due to the linear nature of the scripts, this is what happens:
Spell is cast
Focus is reduced
Damage is calculated based on current focus

So a spell cast at 76% focus will drop to lower that, and use the < 75% focus damage dice - d8s.
This is a bit of an issue that you'll have to navigate from player side unfortunately. I can't think of a way to fix this without creating further issues.
