This only works on creatures, not objects. No matter the color selected, it will do white color on an object, and it will override color cast on yourself.

First two screenshots show me casting Red Light three times - on myself, on my golem, and on my weapon. The result is that I glow white, but golem glows red. Next screenshot is me unequipping weapon - I start glowing red. Then I equip greensteel weapon (which innately has green) - and I start glowing green even if its smaller intensity light. If I wanted, I could override pike's light - but only with white.
