Mounted Archer!

Post by IAmSwampFoot »

I made a Ranger (17), Cav (10), Rogue (3) on the PGCC and was less than impressed. Path of the Archer.

I skipped Favored Enemy at every available level for archer feats (all the new ones). She could escape quite well, she did decent damage (even considering she had to use a shortbow to take advantage of the Cav feats), but her AC was less than usefull, her spells were lacking and her Animal Companion was really fairly weak (Eagle).

Suggestions for such a build?

I have been working on the exact same thing, a Tuigan Horse Archer, though im not nearly complete... i would be happy to trade ideas and give some pointers ... though my first suggestion is...

IF going Ranger/Cav... i have come up with 2 variations (but still in test for both)...

21 Ranger/ 4 Cav / 3 Rogue - My thought is if going this heavy Ranger, may as well go for Bane of Enemies and take at least 3 Favored Enemies (mainly the hard to get ones, for Studied enemies...) My first thought was Elves, Half-Orcs, and Halflings, Then fill out Studied Enemies... and Reason for Rogue 3 is just for the better skill selection (Tumble, UMD, etc) and a couple sneak DMG die... though at a loss of the Spirited CHarge bonuses, and only a T2 mount

or..

23 Ranger/ 7 Cavalier - Same as the above, but we are sacrificing the Rogue Levels, to get T3 mounts... and get Rangers Bane of Enemies, but also Call of the Wild... This will make the companion more useful, more overall damage to any race on your favored/study list... at the cost of Tumble and UMD from no Rogue levels... Now, just so you know, because i did not at first... while mounted i read Tumble does not improve AC while Mounted, only riding skill does... but it still helps off horse..

Also i should ask, are you more Str or Dex based... i assume Dex, but it could help to mention your stat allocation.. Also is race of your character specific, because i have also come up with some other variations such as Fighter/Rogue/Cav as some alternatives

Though, if you want to exchange builds, im still tweaking mine for both, in the PGCC... so if you want to exchange thoughts and ideas i will try to be more attentive to the forums...

Started with human, DEX base with 14 WIS and 14 INT, CON and STR were on the low side but not in the negative for either. CHA is useless to the build so that was left at 8.

Most of the Ranger's available skills were taken with a few sacrifices, although I'll have to sacrifice one more to make the most of UMD and Tumble. Your build that is lower on Cav would allow more spell buffs, so I might look into that.

A different path might be Zen Archery. High WIS for AB and loads of buffs (Rangers don't get much for offensive spells), but I don't know how to work AC into that.

Zen Archery is a decent bet if you combine it with vigilantes KI Shield or defensive wards from a Cleric for example.
The problem with it is usually the damage output, most archer builds heavily rely on sneak dice to make serious dents per shot.

An instesting variant is 3 ranger/4 cav/23 shaman. You could still hold most of archer bonus, while acquire decent AB as well as a fair summon that guards you. Besides, you could create a favored battlefield with spike growth spell. Though at a cost of these new ranger feats.

Per wiki, with ranger levels, Summon Special Mount will always provide you with wild horse(might be the quickest horse), regardless of your cav levels. Ten levels in cav is an expensive investment while the only bonus for your build it is fear immunity and extra feats. Reapply 6 levels back to ranger and your original build will be much more enjoyable.

Although it's a bit weird, do you know you could alway switch the shortbow on your hands into a sling and enchanted shield for better surviability? That would definitly rise your AC back to a normal position.

6Rogue, 3 Vigilance Vigilante, 21 Seeker Cleric

You get the full suit of cleric wards, sneak dice and use exclusively wisdom for your AB and AC.
For burst of five minutes you run full fighter BAB + APR, can haste yourself and get fast shooting for an extra bow attack. Having 6x Sneak attacks in a round is hilarious damage.

Just make sure at creation to pick high enough dex (13 I think) to grab the rapid shot. The vigilance path gives you KI Shield and Zen archery for free, the rest of the feats is creatively distributed (you can go illusion for long invisibility, or grab more archery feats).

i played a tuigan a while back. - although he was a half-elf mixed breed tuigan.....
it was before the arcane archer nerf so numbers may vary - but it dipped both into melee and ranged.

memory had it something along the lines of 10 cav 14aa 6 ranger -.

i'll find the build and edit the reply.

i just realised that ranger is no longer an option for AA - and AA has been nerfed so its no point sharing the build.
