It's REALLY nice having no fade. It let's the flow of RP continue so much smoother.
I love it. Can we keep it?
I agree, real sleep should be for when you log off. That's how most of us RP it anyway.
Resting is so frequent a lot of the time it's just my character tying their laces or getting something out of their boot.
It's nice still being able to keep up with conversations while preventing -100% rest death.

The fade to black allows for more opportunities of RP, than the other way around.
Leaving it as it is, I am sure it will be abused by other players to get out of situations they got them selves in.
The fade to black is good, because it actually leaves the character vulnerable for real, without being able to meta game your self out of it.
Resting often has to be done in front of other people simply because you might die mid conversation if you don't - that's often why resting isn't usually (or actually ever) role played as sleeping or even closing one's eyes.
I have never engaged I player like that my self.
However, I had a long lasting conflict with a player that often broke out into pvp a couple of years ago, we could never best eachother.
But in the end he caught me pants down as I was resting out of my armor, somewhere I thought I was safe, but he proved me wrong. When the screen returned, he was standing infront of me, weapons drawn, warded while I was standing there without my armor.
It was one of the best defeats I had.
(Yes there was rp involved and he was still hostile from a fight we had earlier)
I know this is not a common occurrence. But it is regrettable to take this feature away, IMO.
And yes, we should also take into consideration the assassin classes, even if I do not play them my self, or enjoy the killing without RP, they do have a purpose. And removing the fade to black would remove another possibility for them to make some meaningful RP out of a kill, rather than just straight kill off their target.
There are players who do provide good rp prior to pvp, even if their class does not require it from them.

That entire scenario would play out exactly the same with or without a fade.
The mechanics didn't change.

So we're very much on track.
Re: No Fade During Rest - Leave It As Is?
I for one have always liked the fade to black. I find it immersive that my character has to close their eyes to rest and recover. I think it has made me more inclined to actually roleplay the resting phase; if we're out hunting we assign people to keep watch while the others rest. And while it can be argued that all that still is possible, with or without fade, it wont come as naturally to groups that start roaming the wilds. Precisely because the fade makes us feel vulnerable.
To believe in an ideal is to be willing to betray it.

Though I am sad to see the possibility of my dwarven warrior suffering from narcolepsy I swear I was going to get around to playing some day ruined by this, I have to admit it makes sense. RIP Thoron the Snorer, we never got to know you but will miss you all the same.
Re: No Fade During Rest - Leave It As Is?
I almost always RP resting as sleep, going to my character's bedroom or an inn room to do this. Let's face it, quickly tying your shoelaces (as some people interpret the use of the rest command) has nothing to do with staving off the massive penalties and death you get from sleep deprivation. In situations where my character can't go to bed, I RP her as either dozing off or closing her eyes and resting quietly.
Because of this, I like the fade-to-black and wish it was brought in again.
