More Award Options

Post by ArelithMarketCrash »

Arelith has a lot of weird options for awards and they're mostly race based, some of them can be weirdly numerous but fine (like genasi or tiefling), but things like fey or imp shouldn't share the same space (especially how lore unfriendly some have been in the past). Just saying that however is not really of contribution so here are some ideas that are not making a character strictly stronger in combat. I had this saved on a notepad for a week in case I had more ideas but I really didn't think more about it.

Minor
The Pet - Like a familiar/animal companion summon, but without a strong NPC sheet. Choices vary between surfacer and underdarker.
The Explorer: Skill Focus (Climb), gains Epic Skill Focus (Climb) at level 21. Increased chance of finding loot in chests.
The Investigator: Better tracking, stronger -investigate, +2 spot vs disguises.
The Potion Maker: Brew Potion Feat (allowing mundanes to make more potions through crafting).
The Local: Starts with citizenship in a settlement of choice, does not cost resources from the settlement on year turns, quarter taxes in that settlement are halved. Bonuses only apply to the settlement of their choice.
The Darkdweller: Permanent ultravision, ignores terrain spot penalties due to darkness. Limited to Underdark races and Shadovar.
The Diehard: Instead of immediately dying at -10 HP, they have 3 rounds to be healed before dying. Still dies if their HP drops to -100.

Medium
The Gatherer: Increased chance to gather resources, doubles finds from plants.
The Packrat: +100lbs carry capacity per hard STR above 10 (minimum 100).
The Monster Hunter: Gains 1 Favored Enemy slot, scales at half character level or ranger levels (whichever is highest). Limited to Undead, Outsider, Elemental, Monstrous, Fey, Dragon.
The Ritualist: Counts as having the right classes to perform any ritual (provided they know the languages), if they meet the normal requirements there is a 50% chance of not spending resources on it.

Greater
The Seaborn: Gets Skill Focus (Sail), counts as 1.5x people for manning a ship with their Sail skill (has no effect if the maximum able sailors are present), 10% chance of not spending ship ammo.
The Unorthodox: Access to a racially locked PRC, so a human could become an Earthkin Defender or an Arcane Archer.
The Pet Parrot: Same as The Pet but with a parrot. Once per in game 24 hours, sends a parrot messenger to someone.
Greater Nobility: Noble award combined with Gift of Wealth. Does not stack with Gift of Wealth.
The Librarian: Can read any written language, prints two extra copies of books, higher chance of finding scrolls and books in bookcases.
The Immense: Counts as a Large Creature, with all the benefits and maluses, including colossal weaponry, a greater height and -2 AC/DEX (on top of the AC penalty from size and racial penalties). Limited to Orog, Bugbear and Gnoll.
The Hunted: +10 spot for seeing pick pocket attempts, 25% chance of detecting scrying on self, +2 spot vs. disguises, +2 bluff. 1% of spawning an equal level hostile assassin any time they rest, cannot happen more than once per two in game months.

Major
True Lycanthrope: Incurable lycanthrope, types limited to Wolf, Rat, Boar and Cat. Evil only. Toggleable +1 regeneration outside lycan form.
The Truly Immense: As Immense, but includes half-orc.

More award options would be great but I wouldn't want to have to remake my character to get a pet. Rather the award be exchanged after character creation.

I do really like the idea of "the librarian" award. And please to human arcane archer. Vahn from Baldur's gate was a human arcane archer and I'd love to see that implemented.

Love all of these, definitely agree we need more non race awards to reduce the Arelithian Zoo Effect.

I really love the attention to detail with regards to the selection. I have a feeling this won't create too much work either. Lets hope it is received well. I think the "gift" system was originally made with something like this in mind, but adding options might have been a pain in the butt. Back in my day you could select a background for your character that gave you minor bonuses to your character when you made them, but it was done away with for simplicity sake.

I love this..... but as something to prompt gift rework, not awards.

a) It excludes non-base races from these awards. Want to be a Wild Dwarf with a pet? Won't work. Seaborn Aquatic Elf? Nope. The same could be said of a multitude other combinations.
b) Greater+ options will be bemoaned by those who are unlucky with award system just how greater+ races are bemoaned sometimes.
c) The current gift system is very much "choose if you want to be competitively strong or RP strong". Taking a minor gift over major? Directly impacting your HP/mainstat. Want to do a disguiser? Shoehorned into bluff/perform gift. A lot of current builds take use of Hide/MS due to how stealth operates too to get advantage, relegating gifts like Devotion/GreenFinger/Tongues to those who are likely not trying to get involved anyway.

A lot of above suggestions would work great as minor gifts, if there was a rework to make minor ones less about a plain skill pumping and/or have more slots.

Part of the intention is to reduce the number of fancy races I believe.

I get that, but imo it's a terrible choice to solve that by "you get less RP cookies".
